Editorial
Again, despite the weather we can look
back on the Summer with some satisfaction. Our field trips proved most popular
and, as will be seen from the Field Trip Reports later in this Newsletter, none
of the visits were total washouts. In fact, a member present on all our days out
would have seen 38 species, which, when one considers that this excludes such
relatively common species as Red Admiral, Holly Blue and Grayling, is a very
good total.
Now that the West Midlands Branch is well-established, the time seems right to
put the Branch on a more formal footing and we have decided to hold our first
Annual General meeting to elect officers, review our progress so far, etc. Up to
now the main responsibility for running the Branch has fallen on one or two
individuals which, apart from being an unfair burden on the people concerned, is
highly undemocratic. We hope that as many members as possible will come along to
the A.G.M. which we intend to combine with a showing of members slides,
hopefully repeating our success of last year.
We are also planning, by popular demand, a Winter programme to complement our
Summer field trips, and hope these will be well supported. The accent is on
active conservation work and full details appear elsewhere in this Newsletter.
All of us gain a great deal of personal enjoyment from our interest in
butterflies and it is important that we should be prepared to give something in
return. Butterflies need all the help they can get if they are to survive in an
increasingly hostile world and our Winter programme will provide an opportunity
for B.B.C.S. members to make a positive contribution to their survival.
